Selling a CS2 skin for real money, step by step

Selling a CS2 skin for real money is simple when you know the steps, and risky when you improvise. This guide gives you the complete method, from setting up your Steam account to the transfer into your bank account. Allow about an hour the first time, then a few minutes for later sales, and roughly 8 days of waiting before you receive the money.

Before you start: 4 checks

1. Steam Guard Mobile is turned on

Steam's mobile authenticator (in the Steam app on your phone) is essential. Without it, Steam holds your trades for several days and you cannot sell properly on marketplaces. Turn it on now if you haven't already: it is also your best protection against account theft.

2. Your inventory is public

Marketplaces need to see your inventory to list your items. In Steam, go to your profile, then "Edit Profile", then "Privacy Settings", and set "Inventory" to public.

Your trade link ("trade URL") lets a site or a buyer send you a trade offer. You will find it in Steam: Inventory, then "Trade Offers", then "Who can send me Trade Offers?". This link is not secret, but never confuse it with your Steam API key, which you must not give to anyone.

4. You are an adult and ready to verify your identity

Marketplaces that pay out real money are for adults only, and almost all of them ask for an ID document before the first withdrawal. It is an anti-money-laundering requirement. Have an ID card or passport ready and, sometimes, proof of address.

Step 1: estimate your skin's real value

A skin's price depends on three things:

  • Its name and wear (for example AK-47 | Redline in Field-Tested). This sets the price range.
  • Its exact float, the value between 0 and 1 that determines its condition. Within the same wear level, a low float is often worth more. It is all explained in our guide to float and wear.
  • Its stickers, pattern and StatTrak™, which can add a lot of value to some items.

For a common skin, the lowest price listed on the major marketplaces is a good benchmark: it is the price at which you can sell quickly. Look up your skin in the list of tracked skins to see that price on several sites at once.

Step 2: choose where to sell

Sites don't all take the same cut. For a €100 sale, you get about €95.55 on CSFloat, €92 on Skinport or €85 on SkinBaron at the standard rate, published withdrawal fees included. On an item over €999, SkinBaron drops to 2% and becomes very attractive.

The quickest way: enter your skin in the sell calculator. It ranks sites from most to least profitable with current prices. To understand the underlying differences between sites, read Where to sell your CS2 skins.

There are two broad families:

  • Marketplaces (CSFloat, Skinport, DMarket, CS.Money in market mode, SkinBaron): you set your price and wait for a buyer. Best price, but not immediate.
  • Bot sites (instant sell): the site buys your skin right away, but 5 to 15% below market price. You pay for speed.

Step 3: list your skin for sale

  1. Go to the site by typing its address yourself into your browser (never via a link received in a private message).
  2. The site asks you to sign in with Steam: check that the login page really is on steamcommunity.com.
  3. Enter your trade link in the site's settings.
  4. Choose your skin from your inventory and set your price. To sell quickly, match the lowest listed price, or go slightly below. For a rare item (exceptional float, stickers), don't hesitate to aim higher.

On a bot site like Skinport, you deposit the item on one of the site's bots: a trade is offered to you, you check it and confirm it in the Steam app. On a peer-to-peer site like CSFloat, your item stays in your inventory until it sells.

Step 4: send the item to the buyer (peer-to-peer sites)

On CSFloat and similar sites, you send the trade to the buyer yourself when your skin sells. Before confirming in the Steam app:

  • check that the offer is going to the account indicated by the site (name, account creation date, level);
  • check that you are giving only the item sold;
  • be wary of a cancelled offer that immediately reappears with the same name and the same picture: it is the signature of the API key scam (see skin scams).

Step 5: wait for trade protection to end

Since July 2025, a CS2 item trade can be reversed for 7 days. Marketplaces therefore wait for this window to end before crediting the money to your balance, which means about 8 days in practice. This is normal and it is what protects everyone. If someone offers to "pay right away" outside the site, it is probably a scam. Full details in our guide to the 7-day trade protection.

Step 6: withdraw the money

Once the money is available, request a withdrawal to your bank account or your card, depending on what the site offers:

SiteWithdrawal methodWithdrawal fees
SkinportBank transfer€0 on Skinport's side
CSFloatBank transfer or card (Stripe), USDC0.5 to 2.5% depending on your volume
CS.MoneyVisa card€0 on CS.Money's side
Lis-SkinsCard, crypto, SEPACard: 3.5% + €0.50
DMarketDepends on the countryNot published as a fixed rate

Withdraw regularly rather than leaving a large balance: in 2026, at least two platforms closed, one of them with withdrawals blocked.

How much you will really get

Take a skin that sells for €50. After commission and published withdrawal fees, you get about:

  • €47.77 on CSFloat (€1 commission, €1.23 withdrawal at the highest rate);
  • €47.50 on CS.Money (€2.50 commission);
  • €46.00 on Skinport (€4 commission, free transfer);
  • €45.00 at most on DMarket at the maximum commission rate, excluding unpublished withdrawal fees.

On the Steam Market, you would receive about €43.48 in Steam credit, which cannot be withdrawn.

What about taxes?

Occasionally selling items from your own inventory has nothing to do with a professional activity. However, regularly buying and reselling skins for profit may be treated as a taxable business activity. The rules depend on your country and your situation: if in doubt, check with your tax office or an accountant before getting into trading.

FAQ

Can you legally sell a CS2 skin for real money?

Yes. Skin marketplaces are buying and selling sites between players, for adults only. What is prohibited is gambling (cases, roulette, betting) for minors, and we list no site of that kind.

Why does the money only arrive after 8 days?

Because since July 2025 Steam allows a CS2 item trade to be reversed for 7 days. Sites wait for that period to end to be sure the sale is final.

Do you have to give your Steam API key to sell?

No, never. No major marketplace needs it for selling. The only thing you have to provide is your trade link. An API key given to a fraudulent site lets it hijack your trades.

What is the fastest way to sell?

Instant sell on a bot site: the site buys your skin right away, but 5 to 15% below market price, and the money is still subject to Steam's trade protection before withdrawal.
