Doppler and Gamma Doppler: understanding phases before you buy
Doppler and Gamma Doppler knives are among the best-selling skins in CS2. But behind a single name, "★ Karambit | Doppler (Factory New)" for example, hide several versions with very different colours and prices: the phases. This guide saves you from paying a rare-phase price for a common phase, or the other way round.
Phases and pattern: two different things
A phase is not a pattern. Each phase is actually a different paint in the game (it has its own paint number), but they all carry the same name on the market. Then, within a phase, the pattern (the seed from 0 to 1000) decides where the colours fall. Our pattern guide explains this second level.
The direct consequence: marketplaces and comparison sites group all phases under the same name. The lowest price you see, on ClutchSkin as elsewhere, usually corresponds to the least sought-after phase.
Doppler phases
| Phase | Dominant colours | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Dark, black and purple | Often the cheapest |
| Phase 2 | Pink and purple | The most popular of the classic phases |
| Phase 3 | Green and blue tones | Often the cheapest along with Phase 1 |
| Phase 4 | Blue and purple | Sought after, especially when blue dominates |
| Ruby | Entirely red | "Gem": far more expensive than phases 1 to 4 |
| Sapphire | Entirely blue | "Gem": often the most expensive |
| Black Pearl | Black and deep purple, blue highlights | Rare "Gem" |
Gamma Doppler phases
| Phase | Dominant colours | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 to 4 | Greens and blues, lighter or darker | Smaller price gap between them |
| Emerald | Entirely green | "Gem": by far the most expensive |
The gap between a common phase and a "Gem" is often counted in multiples: a Ruby or a Sapphire can be worth several times the price of a Phase 1 of the same knife.
The pattern also matters within a phase
Even within a Gem, not all copies are equal. On a Ruby, for example, some seeds give a perfect red across the whole blade (players call it a "Max Ruby"), while others show darker patches. On a Phase 2 or a Phase 4, players pay more for patterns where the sought-after colour (pink or blue) covers the visible side.
How to check the phase before paying
- Read the listing title: most sites (CSFloat, Skinport, DMarket…) show the phase next to the name and let you filter by phase.
- Look at the listing's image, not the generic catalog image: it is the only one that shows your copy.
- Inspect in game via the inspect link to see the real look and the seed.
- Compare the price with the right phase: a "Doppler" shown at the catalog price is almost always a common phase. A Gem advertised at that price should make you suspicious.
