Buying your first CS2 skin without getting ripped off

Buying your first skin is exciting, and it is also when people make the most mistakes: overpaying, choosing a shady site or falling for a scam. This guide gives you a simple, step-by-step method. You can follow it in about twenty minutes.

First of all: are you an adult?

Skin marketplaces that work with real money are for adults only. If you are under 18, do not buy on these sites and be wary of the ones that let you. This guide is written for adults.

Step 1: set up your Steam account

  • Turn on Steam Guard Mobile in the Steam app on your phone. It is essential for receiving and confirming trades without a hold, and it is your best protection against account theft.
  • Get your trade link ("trade URL"): in Steam, Inventory, then "Trade Offers", then "Who can send me Trade Offers?". Sites need it to send you your skin.
  • Never give out your Steam API key, your password or your codes. No serious site needs them.

Step 2: set your budget

A skin is not a guaranteed investment. If you resell it one day, you will get back the selling price minus 2 to 15% commission depending on the site, and its price may drop in the meantime. So set a budget you can spend without regret, as you would for a game or an accessory.

Good news: there are great-looking skins for just a few euros. Our guide to cheap CS2 skins gives 9 tips for paying less.

Step 3: choose your skin

  • The skin and the weapon. Start with the weapon you use most: it is the one you will see most often.
  • The wear. Factory New, Minimal Wear, Field-Tested… The price changes a lot from one wear level to the next, the look sometimes less so. Check an image of the exact wear before choosing. It is all explained in float and wear.
  • StatTrak™ or not. The kill counter often costs a lot more. Pointless if you don't care about it.

Look up your skin in the list of tracked skins: each page shows the total price on several sites and how the price has moved over 30 days.

Three typical budgets for a first skin

  • Under €5: lots of popular pistol and SMG skins, and a few rifle skins in Field-Tested. Ideal for learning the ropes without risk.
  • Between €10 and €50: the best-known AK-47, M4 or AWP skins in mid-range wear. This is the bracket where comparing the total price saves the most, because a few percent in fees already means a euro or two.
  • Over €100: rare skins, knives and gloves. Don't start there: first learn to check a trade offer, read a float and spot a fake site on a low-priced purchase.

The weapon pages, such as the one for the AK-47, list every tracked skin with its lowest total price: handy for seeing what your budget allows.

Step 4: choose the site

For a first purchase, favour:

  • a site that has been around for several years, with lots of verifiable reviews;
  • payment by bank card in your own name, which gives you recourse if something goes wrong;
  • a simple process: on a bot site like Skinport, you pay and the bot sends you the skin; on a peer-to-peer site like CSFloat, the seller sends you the trade.

Our marketplace comparison sums up the fees, reputation and workings of each site.

Step 5: compare the total price

The listed price is not always what you pay. Some sites add fees when you pay by card: 2.8% + $0.30 on CSFloat, about 4.2% + $0.03 on CS.Money, 3.1% on Tradeit.gg. On each skin page, our offers are ranked by total paid, known fees included. Still check the final amount on the site before confirming.

Step 6: pay and receive your skin

  1. Go to the site by typing its address or through our links, never via a link received in a private message.
  2. Sign in with Steam and check that the login page really is on steamcommunity.com.
  3. Enter your trade link.
  4. Pay, then wait for the trade offer.
  5. Check the offer in the Steam app: you should receive the skin you bought and give nothing in return. Confirm only if everything matches.

Step 7: understand trade protection

Since July 2025, CS2 item trades are protected for 7 days. In practice, your new skin can be used in game right away, but you can neither trade it nor resell it until those 7 days are up. That is normal. Full details in our guide to trade protection.

What if the skin doesn't arrive?

Don't panic, most delays have a simple explanation:

  1. Check your trade link in the site's settings: if it has changed (you regenerated it in Steam), the site can no longer send you an offer.
  2. Check that your inventory is public and that your account has no trade restriction (Steam Guard recently enabled, password changed, new device).
  3. Look at your incoming trade offers in the Steam app: the offer may be waiting for your confirmation.
  4. On a peer-to-peer site, the seller has a set time to send the item. If they don't, the purchase is usually cancelled and refunded to your balance.
  5. Contact the site's support with your order number. Never accept help from a "support agent" who contacts you first by private message: it is a classic scam.

The 5 beginner mistakes

  1. Buying from an individual outside a platform, by bank transfer or PayPal: they can reverse the trade and keep your money.
  2. Signing in through a link received on Discord or by private message: that is how fake sites get in.
  3. Comparing only the listed price and forgetting payment fees.
  4. Confirming a trade offer without reading it in the Steam app.
  5. Confusing a marketplace with a case-opening site: case, roulette or "upgrade" sites are gambling, not shops. On average, you lose.

FAQ

What is the safest site for buying a first skin?

A long-established site with lots of reviews and card payment. Skinport and CSFloat, for example, each have thousands of reviews with a 4.8 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot as of July 2026. Then compare the total price on our site.

Can I pay with PayPal?

Some sites accept PayPal for deposits, such as CS.Money. Check the fees at checkout: they vary with the method chosen.

How long does it take to receive my skin?

On a bot site, the trade offer usually arrives within a few minutes. On a peer-to-peer site, the seller has a set time to send it, often a few hours.

Can I resell my skin right away if I change my mind?

No, not before the 7-day trade protection ends. And when you resell, you will pay the site's seller commission (2 to 15%).
